There has been considerable media coverage lately for a number of Ethiopian Olympic athletes who’ve publicly proclaimed their support for ongoing demonstrations against the Ethiopian government, and expressed fear that they may be harmed, or worse, if they now return home. The government responded by guaranteeing their safety and stating that all Ethiopians should be proud of the athletes’ achievements.

Seit Anfang August 2016 hat sich die Sicherheitssituation in den Provinzen Oromia und Amhara und im Gebiet Konso in der SNNPR Region massiv verschlechtert. Es kommt zu gewalttätigen Zusammenstößen zwischen Regierungsgegnern und Sicherheitskräften mit Schießereien, wobei Tote und Verletzte zu beklagen sind. Das öffentliche Leben ist teilweise lahmgelegt, Banken sind geschlossen, Internet, Telefon sowie Strom- und Wasserversorgung werden immer wieder unterbrochen. Es kommt immer wieder zu Plünderungen. Österreichern wird dringend angeraten, Protesten bzw. Gegenden, wo Demonstrationen angekündigt sind, fernzubleiben.
