Ethiopians demand US stop funding ‘oppressive regime’ – By Dani Prokop

The U.S. has provided almost $3 billion to the Ethiopian regime in 2015. Nearly half of that money reportedly goes to support the military, according to various media outlets and demonstrators.

About 2,000 demonstrators marched Monday on Capitol Hill to demand the United States stop funding the Ethiopian regime that human rights groups said has killed hundreds and jailed thousands of peaceful protestors.

n Turkey, since the coup attempt on July 15, authorities have jailed over 22,000 soldiers, officers, police, judges and prosecutors on suspicion of involvement with the coup. Up to 100,000 teachers and public servants have been suspended or dismissed. At least 131 media outlets have been shut down, and an estimated 116 journalists are in jail pending criminal investigation – the vast majority since the coup attempt. The state of emergency and emergency decrees have removed crucial safeguards against ill treatment and torture.

The biggest Ethiopian protest in the US history

Arguably today’s Ethiopians protest in Washington DC could be the biggest Ethiopian protest in the US history. Some my argue the 2005 protest following Ethiopia’s rigged election was the biggest but still today’s protest was the biggest in recent history. Protesters successfully sent a clear message to the Obama administration, they said “STOP SUPPORTING THE REPRESSIVE REGIME IN ETHIOPIA!”.
